Sunday! A day like any other day on a monkey-farm in the middle of the south african bush - except for not completely. Because there is fried eggs for breakfast and usually Ada comes to visit from Pretoria. Today she also brought 3 monkeys with - two 1 year old youngsters and a 5 week old pinkface, meaning we got now 3 little ones to take care of and there will always be two people on shift with them.
Also, today "Frikkie-Maleeha-Smurf" gave birth to what is her first baby now (her baby from last season was still born), meaning I'm a vervet happy and proud monky-grandma now :D (Pictuers will follow asap since she's kinda hiding the baby away from us....)

It's been a while. I've been back at Bambelela for 12days now - and it's been busy 23 days.
Within hours of my arrival we got "Nacey" in, a tiny pinkface from Capies Troop, 9 days old at the time. And I would be sitting with her for most of the time.
She was found, lying on the ground of one of our rehab-enclosures. We assume she must have fallen in there somehow.
When she came in she didn't move at all and had difficulties breathing. We put her on oxygene and started cleaning and rinsing the wounds on her shoulders. Once clean they looked like small cuts
and we treated them with some ointment and put some gaze on it for the moment since Silke and Belinda where going to be back soon and they want to see the wounds for themselfes.
Silke then also suspects broken rips and possible head trauma from the fall.
The next day I realized that even though Nacey started to be more alert and moving her head and arms there was no movement whatsoever in her legs or tail. But since there was other monkeys that
recovered from paralizeis in the past we hope "Nacey" will too.
From now on she got several supplements a day such as B-Co, Vit. C, Blackberry, Honey, Traumeel and Arnica as well as gripless to prevent her from getting a fully grown cold or flue.
The more she got massages with Kytta-Ointment for her legs and we would mobilize her legs so the joints wont get stiff. She also got dexa for a few days and metacam against pain when needed.
After a couple of days we could see improvements. She soon didn't need oxygene anymore and she got more alert and wanted to crawl arround. She also slept a lot which is not abnormal for a tiny
baby and would also help with recovery.
Sadly, despite all the improvement we made and all the hope we had it was too much for her body and she passed away late evening f the 26th of October after having a turn to the worst the night before and after having been on oxigene fr more than 24hours again.
Besides being with Nacey there wasn't too much I was doing.
I went out to take some pictures of one of the rehab-monkeys and I went to town with Gert and Jackson to pick up the bakkie from the garage where it was repaired. Afterwards me and Jackson would
drive to Checkers, Shoprite and Fruit & Vegs to pick up food for the monkeys. In the afternoon we drove again to Checkers in the neighbouring town to pick up and dump some rubbish (which is
pretty much disgusting) and then pick up some food for the monkeys.

YES - finally back home again!
Plus I just got the news, that my cat Aïcha finally turned up again!! So this really is a vervet happy day.
My first 1,5 days where rather hectic with the rescue and icu-care of a nine day old vervet monkey baby.
So I'm actually really tired now and will go to bed - maybe I'll be able to write some more tomorrow.
